San Francisco – Nancy Calef reaches deep inside for latest manifestation of her innovative 3D “Peoplescapes.” Valuable political and moral debate cleverly conceived and brilliantly executed sends Calef toward new heights in contemporary American art.

“When I first saw Nancy’s paintings, I thought, `Now, here’s an original idea.’  A picture should say something, and her subject matter and palette express a view of the world beyond her years.” - Jack Levine, former president of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

“Art with an attitude.” Hon. Willie Brown former San Francisco Mayor describes Calef’s particularly timely paintings. Sculpted characters and applied objects on canvas address cultural issues facing society by juxtaposing people in recognizable places and situations; filled with layers of detail, symbolism and humor, each work weaves together a story about contemporary life.

With a nod to Richard Lindner and a glance toward Red Grooms, Calef respects traditional artistic roots when she breaks the plane of the canvas  . . . ” George Krevsky, San Francisco gallerist.

“Brueghel meets the underground stylings of Spain and S. Clay Wilson in the oil and mixed media paintings of Nancy Calef.” - This Week, Datebook,” SF Chronicle

“Nancy’s imagination is boss; her witty and outrageous Peoplescapes are delightfully original, like Nancy herself, full of stories, humor and irony.” Foxy Kidd, Goodie Magazine, publisher/curator.
